Baby Carriage made from a watermelon

You Will Need:

1 large watermelon
Assorted fruit such as berries and grapes
Fresh or Dried flowers (for garnish,if desired)
Melon balls
4 grapefruit halves for wheels

To outline the shape of the carriage handle, place the watermelon on a flat surface. Enlarge the drawing of the carriage handle shown above; make a pattern for the carriage handle. With a wooden skewer, outline the opening for the shell, and then draw around the pattern of the handle.

To relieve the pressure inside the watermelon, use a sharp knife to cut an X through the top of the watermelon.

To make the shell, cut along the outline for the opening in a zigzag fashion. Cut away the unwanted shell in pieces. Scoop out the watermelon fruit, leaving the shell about 1-inch thick. Reserve the watermelon fruit to add to the other fruit in the carriage.

To complete the carriage, attach the handle with toothpicks. At this point, the carriage may be covered with plastic wrap and refrigerated overnight. Before serving, cut two grapefruits in half for the wheels and attach to carriage. Place carriage on a platter of lettuce leaves. Fill the carriage with melon balls or pieces, berries, grapes or other fruit. Garnish with mint, and add fresh or dried flowers if desired.
